How it works

How Style Scout Matches Clothes

What happens between uploading a photo and seeing where to buy each piece — including where it works less well, and what happens to your photo.

Updated

In short: Style Scout uses Google's AI to find each garment in your photo, searches fashion retailers for each one in your country, compares candidates with your photo where a product photo is available, and picks the closest match. It also searches Amazon for a cheaper alternative and shows one when one is found. Weaker matches are clearly marked.

The steps

  1. 1

Your browser shrinks the photo and sends it to our servers. If there's more than one person in it, you pick who to scan.

  2. 2

Google's AI (Gemini) finds each garment and accessory, and notes its type, colour and details, and who it's cut for.

  3. 3

Each piece is described in words and searched for across fashion retailers for your country, with a separate search on Amazon for a cheaper alternative.

  4. 4

Where a product photo is available, each candidate is compared with that piece cropped from your photo. Google Cloud Vision also looks for web pages showing the same item.

  5. 5

An AI ranking step picks one closest match per piece and, when one qualifies, a cheaper alternative.

How sure is a match?

A confident match is shown as it is. A weaker one is marked “Possible match”, and when nothing clears that bar you see the best candidate we had, marked “Closest we found”. If a match is wrong, you can report it from the result, which helps avoid showing that link again.

The cheaper alternative

The cheaper alternative always comes from Amazon, and not every piece gets one. It's shown only when one is found that looks close enough. When both prices can be read, it has to be at least 10% cheaper than the closest match; when a price can't be read, it's shown without a saving figure. For tips on judging one, see how to find cheaper alternatives to any outfit.

Where it struggles

  • Plain basics. A plain white T-shirt or black jeans has few details to tell one product from another, so many listings look equally close.
  • Small accessories. Watches, sunglasses and jewellery are small in a full-outfit photo, so there's less to go on.
  • Photos that only exist on social media. When a photo hasn't appeared on any shop's website, there are no pages showing the same item to find, and the match rests on the description and photo comparison alone.
  • Prices that can't be read. Some product pages don't give us a price. Then we can't show one, and can't work out the saving on a cheaper alternative.
  • Countries without an Amazon storefront we support. Links fall back to a nearby storefront or the US one, which may not ship to you.
  • The right product found but not chosen. Sometimes a good match is among the candidates but the ranking picks a different one.

A clear, well-lit photo where each piece is fully visible gives the best results. For more tips, see how to find where an outfit is from a photo.

What happens to your photo

  • Your browser shrinks the photo and sends it to our servers, which send it to Google's AI (Gemini, through our host Lovable) to identify the clothes. Crops of each garment also go to Google's AI and to Google Cloud Vision.
  • Our search services receive text descriptions of each garment, not your photo.
  • We don't keep the full-size photo once the scan is finished.
  • A small preview and your results are saved automatically: in this browser if you're not signed in, or to your account if you are.
  • If you share a look, a larger copy is kept so the link works; if you also add it to the public gallery and it's approved, anyone can see it.
  • When a look is approved into the public gallery, a short description of it is written automatically from the text of its results (the names, colours and details of the pieces). The photo isn't used for this. The description is shown on the look's page and says that it was written automatically.
  • Google, Lovable and our other providers handle what they receive under their own terms, including how long they keep it.

Frequently asked

Does Style Scout find the exact item?

Sometimes, but it isn't guaranteed. Results are the closest matches the search finds, and weaker ones are marked “Possible match” or “Closest we found” so you can tell them apart.

Why didn't I get a cheaper alternative for every piece?

A cheaper alternative on Amazon is shown only when one is found that looks close enough. When both prices can be read, it has to be at least 10% cheaper than the closest match.

Which countries does it work in?

Shops and Amazon links are localised for 14 Amazon storefronts. Other countries get a nearby storefront or the US one.

Does Style Scout keep my photo?

We don't keep the full-size photo. A small preview and your results are saved in your browser, or to your account if you're signed in. The photo is sent to Google's AI to identify the clothes.
