How to Find a Dress From a Photo
A dress in a wedding photo, a screenshot from a show, a stranger's post — and no tag in sight. Here's how to work out where it's from, or find one close enough.
In short: Upload the photo to Style Scout. It picks out the dress on its own, finds the closest match across fashion retailers and, for most dresses, a cheaper alternative on Amazon — free, in under 20 seconds. If you need the exact original from a specific brand, also run a cropped photo of the dress through Google Lens, which searches the whole web.
Why dresses are hard to track down
A dress is usually the whole outfit, which sounds like it should make it easy. In practice the same silhouette is sold by dozens of brands at once, so a search that only matches "black slip dress" returns hundreds of near-identical results and no way to tell which one you saw. Photos also hide the things that set one dress apart from another: the hem is cropped out, the lighting shifts the color, or a jacket covers the neckline.
The details that identify a dress
Whether you search by image or by typing, these are the features that narrow a dress down. The more of them the photo shows clearly, the better the match:
- Silhouette: slip, wrap, shirt dress, bodycon, A-line, fit-and-flare.
- Length: mini, midi or maxi — and where exactly the hem falls.
- Neckline and straps: square, cowl, halter, sweetheart, spaghetti straps.
- Sleeves: sleeveless, cap, puff, long.
- Fabric: satin, linen, knit, chiffon. Shine and drape show up well in photos.
- Print and color: the scale of a floral or the exact shade often separates the original from a lookalike.
Getting a good match from the photo
- Use a full-length shot if you have one, so the hem and length are visible.
- Front-facing photos work best — the neckline carries a lot of the identity.
- For a video, pause on a clear, well-lit frame before taking the screenshot. Motion blur hides fabric and print.
- If the color looks off because of filters or evening light, try a second photo of the same dress if one exists.

If you can't find the exact dress
- Check the source. On Instagram and TikTok, brands are often tagged in the photo or named in the caption or comments.
- Try Google Lens on a cropped image. Style Scout searches major fashion retailers, not the whole web, so a dress sold by one small or specialist retailer may only show up in a web-wide search.
- Settle for the closest match. Seasonal dresses sell out and aren't restocked. A close alternative in the same silhouette, length and fabric is often the realistic result.
Frequently asked
How can I find out where a dress is from?
Upload the photo to a visual search tool. Style Scout identifies the dress and finds the closest match across fashion retailers plus a cheaper alternative on Amazon. For the exact original at a specific store, also try Google Lens, and check the post for a tagged brand.
Can I find a dress from a screenshot of a video?
Yes. Pause on a clear, well-lit frame where the whole dress is visible, take the screenshot and upload it.
Can I find a cheaper version of a designer dress?
Usually. Style Scout searches for a lower-priced alternative alongside the closest match for most pieces, so you can compare the two.
Does it work if someone else is in the photo?
Yes. Style Scout identifies garments individually, so you can pick the dress you want from the pieces it finds.
