How to Find Clothes From a TikTok or Instagram Screenshot

Most outfits people want to find come from a video or a post, not a shop. A screenshot is enough to start, if you capture the right frame. Here is how to get a good one and what to do with it.

Updated

In short: Take a screenshot of the sharpest frame where the outfit is fully in view, crop out captions and buttons, then upload it to Style Scout. It picks out each piece, finds the closest match across fashion retailers and a cheaper alternative on Amazon when one is found.

Why screenshots from videos and posts are different

A photo from a shop is lit and framed to show the clothes. A frame from a video is not. The person is moving, the light changes, and the clothes can be blurred, partly covered or cut off by the edge of the screen. The same clothes can look very different two frames apart, so most of the work is choosing the frame.

How to take a screenshot that matches well

  • Pause on the sharpest frame. Step through the video until the person is still and the clothes are not blurred.
  • Get the whole outfit in. Head to shoes is best. If a piece is cut off, expect a looser match for it.
  • Crop out the app. Buttons, captions and comment bars are not part of the outfit and can sit on top of it. Crop to the person.
  • Avoid filters and effects. They change color and texture. If the same outfit appears in an earlier or later frame without them, use that one.
  • Try a second frame. If the first match looks off, a different angle often shows the collar, the print or the shoes better.

Before you scan: check what the creator already shared

Many creators name their clothes in the caption, the pinned comment, a linked page or a tagged brand. That can be the quickest route to the exact piece. Scanning is for when nothing is listed, or when you want a similar piece at a different price.

Why not search the screenshot with an image search?

A general image search looks for the whole picture, so it tends to return the same post or similar scenes rather than the clothes. A tool that splits the outfit into pieces and searches each one does better. For how the two differ, see reverse image search for clothes.

Frequently asked

Can I find clothes from a TikTok video?

Yes. Pause the video on a frame where the outfit is clear and take a screenshot, then upload it to Style Scout. It marks each piece it finds and shows the closest match at fashion retailers, plus a cheaper pick on Amazon when one is found. Videos move, so the frame you choose matters more than the video itself.

Does a screenshot with captions and buttons on it still work?

Usually, but the match is better without them. Buttons, captions and comment bars take up space and can sit over the clothes. Crop the screenshot to the person before you upload it, or choose a frame where the overlays are not on the outfit.

Where is the outfit from, if the creator did not say?

Check the caption, the pinned comment and any tagged accounts first, since creators often list brands there. If they do not, upload the screenshot to Style Scout to see the closest matches at fashion retailers, then open one to check the color, fabric and price at the store.

What if several people are in the screenshot?

Style Scout detects the people in the frame and lets you choose whose outfit to scan. Pick the person you are interested in, so the pieces you get are theirs.

Why is the match not exactly what the creator wore?

A screenshot shows color, cut and shape, but not the label or the fabric. Style Scout shows the closest match it can find, which may be the same piece or a similar one. Compare the details on the product page with your screenshot before you buy.

Is it free?

Yes, and no sign-up is needed to scan a screenshot. Fair-use limits may apply.
